Additional Tracy Chapman Information

One of the most striking debut albums ever released, this disc instantly established Chapman as a musical force, and with good reason. Immediacy, integrity of purpose, and unqualified artistry are apparent in nearly every song. And while "Fast Cars" remains Chapman's best-known work, "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" is that rarest breed: a song which is both topical and timeless. Any exploration into Chapman's work should begin with this at times stunning effort; it's a disc of remarkable uniformity and clarity that Chapman has yet to improve on. --Wayne Pernu

What Customers Say About Tracy Chapman:

Hopefully someday we can look back and say that things are much different now. I originally bought this CD back in the 80s, and while living near South-Central LA, found the songs to be honest, sensitive and a bit sad that there is so much truth in the words. It's one of my favorite CDs.

Baby Can I Hold You never stays in the case either. March 25, 2009,Jay Leno and his producers tend to favor Adult Alternative bands or similar individual artists for the final few minutes. Tonight's set featured what apparently was described as an indie band. I do not know if she is touring this summer but if she comes to Jones Beach I'm there early.Jay Adler, Music Critic

I go through all that trouble when I want to hear some fine music on an old media and Tracy Chapman is more than worth it. Purchasing Tracy Chapman I think with no thought to her debut music not being current will complement your library to the highest level of excellence. So I hook up the player to a sub woofer and shoot Tracy's music through portable speakers. It's funny but I have this album on a cassette and I happen to own a Walkman.

They went right into Tracy Chapman's Talkin Bout a Revolution and although I was surprised to hear Tracy's memorable song from this explosive and much loved debut album covered as such,it was not a bad cover. I was so taken aback by her strikingly beautiful material and vocals that I just considered her to be a moving and evocative singer songwriter. I think this is a smart move because this genre is where you will find the better musicians and recording artists that are singer songwriters. Music critics in 1988 thought protest music when they evaluated Tracy Chapman but I have to say she never impressed me as being insistent or aggressive about things.

I started listening to her signature song Fast Car which is on this album back in 1988 and even today it is so good that it is addictive. The group consisted of maybe eight players all in varied garb somehow meshing inexplicably into a credible color scheme. The indie band did a great job but there is no singer songwriter quite like Tracy Chapman.

I'd say that I definitely got my moneys worth. I have only ever heard 2 played on the radio and I listen to a wide variety of music. And as always the delivery time was excellent. I really enjoy listening to this CD. The radio doesn't play nearly enough Tracy Chapmans songs.

Wow, take a deep breathe. Trying to come from nothing and become something, anything. Everything from love, heartbreak, politics, fascism, poverty, and spousal abuse. The rich get richer and the poorer get poorer. Tracy Chapman's first album is a rare classic.

The deep subject matter Tracy Chapman sings about is what makes her Tracy Chapman. It really makes a clear statement of fascism and how we all are caught up in the rat race called life. The whole concept of this album that I think Tracy Chapman was trying to convey is hope. Like the lyric "draggin' my furs on the ground". This song reminds me how naive we all were in 80's, thinking this world would or could change for the better. When I heard the song recently it reminded me of her. The song "Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution" kicks off the album. I dedicate "Mountains O' Things" to Oprah.

Each song tells a story, and alot of subject matter is covered. Build from the ground up. It's pretty dark but she tells a story and makes it beautiful music. I like how each song tells a story, almost like a painting. Ending poverty sounds like an ideal concept but it's like fighting the powers that be, and actually things seem like they have gotten worse since 1988.
