I would have purchased it from iTunes but Amazon has a better deal. She should have been a superstar indeed. I still love this album.
At best you get two songs that you would play often. I hope she comes out with more beautiful music. Tracy's debut album surpasses that there are 11 songs and I love probably 9 of them.
I purchased this album when it first came out way back when, I was a teenager then. I can't say that about most of the albums I have purchased in my lifetime. I am a fan.
I came to Amazon to purchase it on CD, because I do not listen to cassette tapes anymore. Of course my ultimate favorite is FAST CAR, but I love almost all of the other tracks.
Love this CD. And such real lyrics. She told stories that made you feel like she was in your life at that moment, and that by hearing it through music, you could change your circumstances. I loved "Fast Car" when it came out, and bought this album on vinyl. Love Chapman. Hearing this CD was like stepping back to 1988, when I had a fast car, and was ready to go anywhere. I listened to it until the grooves wore out. What a voice.
Hopefully someday we can look back and say that things are much different now. I originally bought this CD back in the 80s, and while living near South-Central LA, found the songs to be honest, sensitive and a bit sad that there is so much truth in the words. It's one of my favorite CDs.
Baby Can I Hold You never stays in the case either. March 25, 2009,Jay Leno and his producers tend to favor Adult Alternative bands or similar individual artists for the final few minutes. Tonight's set featured what apparently was described as an indie band. I do not know if she is touring this summer but if she comes to Jones Beach I'm there early.Jay Adler, Music Critic
I go through all that trouble when I want to hear some fine music on an old media and Tracy Chapman is more than worth it. Purchasing Tracy Chapman I think with no thought to her debut music not being current will complement your library to the highest level of excellence. So I hook up the player to a sub woofer and shoot Tracy's music through portable speakers. It's funny but I have this album on a cassette and I happen to own a Walkman.
They went right into Tracy Chapman's Talkin Bout a Revolution and although I was surprised to hear Tracy's memorable song from this explosive and much loved debut album covered as such,it was not a bad cover. I was so taken aback by her strikingly beautiful material and vocals that I just considered her to be a moving and evocative singer songwriter. I think this is a smart move because this genre is where you will find the better musicians and recording artists that are singer songwriters. Music critics in 1988 thought protest music when they evaluated Tracy Chapman but I have to say she never impressed me as being insistent or aggressive about things.
I started listening to her signature song Fast Car which is on this album back in 1988 and even today it is so good that it is addictive. The group consisted of maybe eight players all in varied garb somehow meshing inexplicably into a credible color scheme. The indie band did a great job but there is no singer songwriter quite like Tracy Chapman.
Check wikipedia for the background on this song - generational poverty She won Grammy for an awesome song "Fast Car" from this album.
